From our Mailbag

Whilst visiting the family of a great uncle earlier this year, we were shown an interesting postal item from India.

Posted from Quilon, Kerala in May 1956, the stitched cotton bag contained samples of cashew kernels being sent to the RW Midgley Trading Company in Christchurch.

The custom declaration gives a value of R25 which was then worth about £2.

We were amazed at the careful construction of the parcel and wonder what value the item may have in current philately.

Hi to both of you,
Thanks for your email, It has been very scary here, so far a few cracks under some windows but Stan says he hopes no more, fingers crossed. On Saturday morning, the main bridge to the city was closed which made it iffy to get away from the beach. It was bitterly cold with the power off for two days though, for many it was even longer. Stan got the old primus stove out from the garage so we could have hot drinks and kept the vac flask full We made hot bacon butties for breakfast, minus the toast !!Our daughter lives near Alesbury, very near the Darfield epicentre, but no damage thank goodness. The aftershocks are pretty awful, well over 200, it’s like living on jelly! Some aftershocks are as high as 5.2 so not very nice. My grandaughter’s house in Kaiapoi is floating in 2-3 parts.Sorry to be delayed in sending circuit boxes back to you, but will get them away soon. Hope your family down here are ok, all the best, S and S

Editors Note
My mother and a brother both lost their chimneys and my sister has had to replace water cylinders and TV’s that have fallen of their stands in her motel near the airport. A brother who was holidaying in the Shetland’s at the time rang to check everything was OK and said he was “sorry to be missing out on the fun” ! Some fun !!

Our sympathies go to members who have had losses and we wish them well as they sort out the mess.
